Random Team Generator

How to use it, step by step
- Type in the names in the box above, one per line or separated by commas. The order doesn’t matter.
- Pick the mode. Split by number of teams (I want 2 groups) or by team size (I want groups of 4). You’re in charge.
- Set the number and hit Create teams.
- Not happy with the split? Hit Shuffle again as many times as you like.
- Like how it turned out? Copy the result and drop it in the group chat.
And that’s it.
⚠️ Odd numbers
With an odd number of players —or an odd number of groups— one team may end up with one extra. Three fair options: let the team with fewer players start the game, rotate the “extra” person between rounds, or have them play referee/wildcard. Any of them works, as long as you agree on it before you start.
What it’s for (and when you’ll be glad you have it)
A team generator comes in handy in way more situations than you’d think:
- Board games and party games in teams, where splitting the group well is half the battle.
- Birthdays and family gatherings, so the kids don’t squabble over who goes with whom.
- Class and activities, when a teacher needs to set up working groups with no favouritism.
- The weekend with mates, from a quick kickabout to a tournament of just about anything.
- Work, for group activities or handing out tasks without anyone pulling a face.
The beauty of it is that randomness takes the pain out of deciding. You get who you get. No favourites. No conspiracies. Blame fate (or our algorithm, though that sounds less epic).
When teams are picked “by hand” it always ends the same way: the usual suspects together, someone left till last, and ten minutes wasted before you even start playing. Our team generator sorts it in a flash: type in the names, say how many groups you want, and done. Random, fair, and off you go.
It’s right here, at the top of this page. It’s free, no sign-up needed, and it works on your phone just as well as on your computer.
When randomness isn’t the best idea
If you’re playing something competitive and there are big skill gaps between players, pure randomness can create wildly unbalanced teams.
Trick: split the group into two blocks —“stronger” and “weaker”—. Use the Team Generator to split the stronger players into two teams. Use it again to split the weaker ones. Then put the two halves together. That way every team ends up with a similar mix of levels and the games get much more exciting.
Switch up the teams between rounds. If you’re playing several games, shuffle again each time. That way everyone plays with everyone and nobody’s stuck forever on the “bad team”.

Frequently asked questions
How do I split an odd group into teams?
Pick the number of teams and the tool splits everyone as evenly as possible: the “leftover” is shared out one by one, so at most one team will have one extra person. Decide beforehand how to even it out (rotation, starting first, playing referee).
Can I make teams of 2?
Yes. Switch to “by team size” mode and set it to 2. The tool works out how many pairs come out on its own.
Is there a limit on participants?
Nope. Add as many as you like: from 4 mates to a whole classroom.
Is the split really random?
Completely. Every time you hit “Create teams” or “Shuffle again” it reshuffles from scratch, like dealing cards. Nobody gets an edge.
Do I need to sign up or pay?
Nope and nope. It’s free and runs in your browser. Your names aren’t sent anywhere: they stay on your device.
