Bollywood dance history
Bollywood dance is a vibrant Indian dance style that was born in Bollywood cinema, the Indian film industry, in the 1940s. The Bollywood dance style was developed from a fusion of classical and Indian folk dance styles.
In the 1940s and 1950s Bollywood cinema mainly produced films with epic and mythological stories, in which classical Indian dance was used to depict important scenes. However, in the 1960s, Bollywood films began to include songs and dances that were more popular and accessible to the general public.
From the 1970s onwards, Bollywood dance evolved further and its songs and dances became an important part of Bollywood films, used in entire scenes to advance the storyline and to express emotions.
In the 1990s and 2000s, Bollywood dances became popular all over the world thanks to emigration and globalization. Bollywood films began to include dances and songs in English and Bollywood dances incorporated some elements of more modern and Western dance styles, without losing their characteristic Indian essence.
