We bought this nice dice pack at a great price on Amazon, which also includes a dice cup and an hourglass.

Deciding the number of rounds

The fastest word is played in rounds and turns. You must agree on a limit for the game. We recommend starting with a 4 round game.

Goal of the game

icon goal

What do you need to do to win?

The goal is to create the longest word in the shortest time possible, or at least faster than the others.

“The fastest word” rules: playing a game

icon word

Rolling dice and thinking of a word

The dice are rolled – no matter who rolls them – and all players at the same time try to create the longest word they can think of with the letters that have been rolled. When they have it, they write it on a piece of paper and quickly leave it face down in the center of the table. Being the fastest will have a prize.

End of the round

When all but one of the papers are in the center of the table, the round is over. The slowest player will have no points.

Adding points

All papers are lifted and scored in this way:

  1. Each player -except the last one- will score as many points as letters in his word. 4 letters = 4 points.
  2. The first player to leave the paper will add as many points as there are players, the second one point less and so on. If there are 4 players the first player will add 4 points, the next 3, the next 2…. and the last player will add nothing.

Rule 1 – About vowels

If you get a single vowel or no vowel at all, you can re-roll the dice to change the letters.

icon rules

Rule 2 – About valid words

Proper nouns, verb tenses, words in other languages, abbreviations, and especially invented words are not allowed.

icon rules

Rule 3 – About a possible wildcard

Some packs of letter dice have a die with a joker on one side. The joker can be used as any letter but does not add points.

icon rules

Rule 4 – No aids

During a turn it is not possible to consult anywhere whether a word is valid or not.

icon rounds

Next turns…

Once the points have been scored, it is the turn of the player on the right.

Game over. Who wins?

icon game over

End of game

The game ends when the number of rounds agreed upon before the start of the game is completed.

icon winner

And the winner is…

At that moment, the points obtained in each lap are added up. The player with the most points is the winner.

Tips for playing “The fastest word”

Having a dictionary handy

You can use a dictionary as a judge: only words that are in that dictionary are valid. And that’s all.

Game played in pairs

If you play in pairs, both players can speak and actively participate in the creation of the words during their turn.

Alternate ending – reaching a certain number of points

Subsequent turns… In this variant, the game ends when a player reaches a certain number of points, for example, 50 points, always finishing the current round.

Games like “The fastest word”

Before playing “The Fastest Word” we recommend playing The Longest Word, which is very similar but without the pressure of speed. The letter dice can also be used to play Crossdice, a dice version of the classic crossword game Scrabble.

LOODENS rating

If you have letter dice you must try this game. It is dynamic and fun, not like playing Scrabble or Crossdice. Playing everyone at the same time, rewarding the fastest and penalizing the slowest makes the game more like a party game than a word game.
